story {the closet creature}

Bump! Bump! Scratch!  Adam opened his eyes and pulled the covers up to his chin. He stared around his room, searching the darkness for the thing that was making those scary sounds.  The closet door moved as something banged on it from the inside.  “Who’s there?” Adam asked in a shaky voice.  The closet slowly began to open. Adam jumped out of bed and ran to the closet door, slamming it shut with his palms. He grabbed his desk chair and propped it against the door handle. Then he ran out of his room and down the hall. His brother’s door was wide open, and Adam jumped onto David’s bed.  “Adam?” David asked in a groggy voice. “What are you doing in here?”  Adam tugged on David’s arm. “There’s something in my closet!”  “You probably had a bad dream. Go back to bed.”  Adam yanked the blankets off the bed. “It wasn’t a dream. I was awake, and the closet door started opening by itself!”  David sighed. “Fine. But ...

story {the greedy crocodile}

Once there was a crocodile. He was really hungry. He saw a boy. The boy had some meat in his hand. He decided he wanted to eat both the boy and his meat. He would trick the boy. The crocodile said, "Oh! Little Boy! could you please give me some meat?" The boy said, "Oh no, you will eat me" The crocodile said, "I promise, I won't eat you." So the boy went near the crocodile to give him the meat. But, instead, the crocodile tried to catch the boy. It caught just his arm. There came a rabbit. It wanted to help the boy. It did help the boy. The crocodile wanted to eat the rabbit first, so he let go of the boy's arm. The boy ran away and escaped and the rabbit too fled away. story {the honest woodcutter}

Once there lived a poor woodcutter. He used to cut trees in the woods. One day he was cutting wood on the bank of a river. His axe fell down into the river. The river was deep. He could not take his axe out. He sat on the bank and began to weep. Mercury, the god of water appeared. He asked the reason of his weeping. The woodcutter told the whole story. Mercury dived into the water and brought a golden axe. The woodcutter refused to take it. Mercury again dived and brought a silver axe. The woodcutter did not take it either. Then he brought an iron axe. The woodcutter took it gladly. Mercury was much pleased. He rewarded the woodcutter with the other two axes. Moral: Honesty is the best policy.

story {the prince and the snake}

A mouse and a frog were friends. Every morning the frog would hop out of his pond and go to visit his friend who lived in a hole in the side of a tree. He would return home at noon. The mouse delighted in his friend’s company unaware that the friend was slowly turning into an enemy. The reason? The frog felt slighted because though he visited the mouse everyday, the mouse on his part, had never made an attempt to visit him. One day he felt he had been humiliated enough. When it was time for him to take leave of the mouse, he tied one end of a string around his own leg, tied the other end to the mouse’s tail, and hopped away, dragging the hapless mouse behind him. The frog dived deep into the pond. The mouse tried to free himself but couldn’t, and soon drowned. His bloated body floated to the top. A hawk saw the mouse floating on the pond’s surface. He swooped down, and grabbing the mouse in his talons, flew to the branch of a nearby tree. The frog, of course, was hauled out of the wat...

One evening a poor farm worker was on his way home. A very pleasant smell came from a sweetmeat shop on the road. His mouth watered. He went to the shop and stood there for some time. Then he turned to go because he could not afford to buy the sweetmeat. Just then he heard the shopkeeper's commanding voice, "Stop. You can't go away without making payment."  "Payment? For what?" asked the man. "For the sweetmeat," said the shopkeeper. "But I haven't eaten any," said the man. "But you did enjoy its smell, didn't you?" asked the shopkeeper. "Smelling is as good as eating." The poor man looked very much worried. Now, a wise man was standing by. He took the man aside. He whispered a word of advice into his ears. The man's face lit up. He went up to the shopkeeper and jingled a few coins in his pocket. The shopkeeper seemed pleased. He said,"Come on, pay the money."  The man said, "I have ...
